About Israel

Israel has an infrastructure of advanced medical and paramedical researchers. There are many scientific studies related to biotechnology and biomedicine, the Israeli researchers have used this knowledge to develop pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and advanced treatment therapies.

Medicine and genetics

Israeli scientists are working around the clock to create and develop human growth hormones that fight against viruses and infections. Genetic engineering has led to a wide range of developmental diagnostic methods based on monoclonal antibodies. In Israel there is intense  activity regarding stem cell research. The inception of stem cell research began in Israel in the early 1960’s. As of 2010, Israeli scientists have been leaders in the number of published articles relating to stem cell research in all major scientific journals and periodicals per capita.

Biomedical Engineering

Israel has developed more sophisticated medical equipment related to diagnosis and treatment such as computerized tomography, medical scanners, MRI and surgical lasers that have been marketed worldwide. Other Israeli innovations include controlled release liquid polymers to prevent plaque accumulation, devices for reducing swelling of benign and malignant prostate tumors, a miniature camera incorporated in an ingested capsule used to diagnose gastrointestinal diseases.
In 2009, scientists from Israel and several European countries have developed a prosthetic robot arm, called SmartHand,  which works like a real hand and allows patients to use it for writing, typing, playing piano and for other sensitive movements.  The prosthesis has sensors that allow the patient to feel natural sensations of touch.
A new MRI system for the identification and diagnosis of tumors developed at the Weizmann Institute has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This MRI system is already used in the diagnosis of breast and testicular cancer. The new system will replace invasive procedures and will give instaneous results that will eliminate the time for waiting.

Pharmaceuticals

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, headquartered in Petah Tikva, Israel, is the largest generic drugmaker in the world and one of the largest pharmaceutical companies globally. Teva is specialized in generic medicins and in creating active pharmaceutical ingredients used in products such as Copaxone and Laquinimod for multiple sclerosis treatment and Rasagiline for Parkinson’s disease treatment.
